Capel
Rugs – Capel Inc
is a family owned
business with over 90 years
experience. In 1917 Mr. Leon
Capel was living in Troy, NC
where he had an incredible
passion for braided
rugs.
Around the time that Henry
Ford invented the tractor,
Leon launched his first
Capel
Braided Rugs collection
entitled “New
Departure”. From day one, the
idea was to provide beautiful
yet durable rugs that would
last. Durable braided area
rugs are what he had
envisioned all along. In 1936,
two spinning mills were
acquired by Capel rugs to keep
up with the growing
popularity. It soon became
apparent to Leon that every
family could use Capel braided
rugs. In the 1960s, Capel Rug
Company branched out from
braids and began offering
imported carpets from Japan
and Finland. They eventually
started purchasing high
quality hand
knotted rugs and
hand
tufted rugs primarily
from India and China. In 1975
after attending college, Jesse
Capel hopped on board and was
the first of 3 sons to join
Capel Rugs. The other brothers
Leon Jr. and Aaron soon
followed suit. This second
generation of family members
are referred to as G2. The
third generation (G3) joined
the business in the 1980s.
Today this 3rd generation
plays a major role in Capel
Rugs dealing with everything
from licensing to human
resources. In 1978 Capel’s
efforts really started to
payoff, with the Old Homestead
collection induced into the
World Floor Covering
Association Hall of Fame.
Capel Area Rugs were also
recognized as America’s oldest
and largest importer and
manufacturer of braided rugs.
The man who started it
all passed away in 1972
however what he has left
behind is truly a dream come
true. To this day, Capel rugs
still does their own spinning,
dyeing, braiding and sewing
from their factories in Troy,
NC. With over 400 employees,
they continue to perfect their
craft and desire to provide
quality products. We invite to
