The compact structure makes it difficult for dirt to enter the rug fibre making them easy to maintain. The flat surface is also due in part from the absence of knots. Warmer regions will produce brittle, dryer wool whereas healthy sheep in colder regions will produce soft, silky wool. Cotton will allow for a more compact weave due to its elasticity.
