Traditional rugs are available in many colors, styles, materials, shapes, and sizes. Today, many are hand-knotted or hand-loomed offering a classic look that can help define any home or office setting. Experiment with soft, gentle tones or rich, luxurious tones. As a homeowner you are to determine the kind of rug that will work for you by viewing the style and colors around your home. The rug needs to be compatible with the surrounding furnishings to properly harmonize your decor. Traditional area rugs can be used to cover wooden, tile and other hard flooring surfaces. Early American homes had hardwood floors covered with large, rectangular rugs revealing only a small portion of the floor. Not only will it hide nicks, scratches and other blemishes, it will hold warmth and prevent slipping on an otherwise slippery surface.

Traditional carpets can enhance any room’s appearance. Fitting for a formal setting yet suitable for casual comfort. Many homeowners place oval or round braided rugs beneath their kitchen tables and chairs. Another great place is just in front of the fireplace, talk about cozy! If placed in a high-traffic area it may need to replaced sooner than if it were laid in a calm, quiet room. Traditional rugs are made of polyester, wool, cotton and other natural fibers. The weave and material will determine the price and durability of the area rug. Wool is stronger than cotton but more expensive. Braided area rugs are known for their durability. Certain materials can be cleaned with a garden hose (polypropylene) whereas others require a delicate wash (bamboo). The size of the rug will be based on the size of the room and your motifs. By placing furniture directly on top with the rug visible from the back, it will be viewed as a place mat for your furniture. If the front of the furniture is just on the edge of the rug you will create a cozy conversation area.
